This place is just straight out awesome. The selection here is just beyond compare. If the fruit you're looking for is in season, you're pretty sure to find it here. My wife and I picked up some sapotes, rose apples, and a cashew apple. This last trip to Hawaii, my wife discovered that she was in love with sapotes, and the ones they had here didn't disappoint. The rose apple tasted like we were eating rose petals. The cashew apple was totally not what we expected, so interesting eating a juicy fruit that dehydrates you... I read later that you're supposed to mix these with sugar water and make a drink out of it. This place is a food adventure just waiting to happen, if you're up to the challenge!

Fabulous selection of fresh, tropical, organic fruit. Rambutan, guava, papaya, etc.... If you don't know what it is or how to tell if it's ripe, don't worry. The ladies at the stand will help you out!

Not that impressed and the woman working there wasn't super friendly. She did have a few items to taste which was good considering I had never even heard of a Jackfruit before. Worth stopping at if it is on your way to where you are going.

OK, people. Let's be honest. It's absolutely mind-boggling that in this tropical region with plentiful fruit literally just laying around all over that you could get such a mediocre smoothie for $6.50. Yo people, why are you spending $6.50 for a tiny smoothie...in Hawaii? If we were in downtown Manhattan, where there aren't many fruit trees, $6.50 might be an appropriate price, but this is Hawaii and people are literally tossing outstanding papayas into the garbage. On the Hilo side, you can get 8 papayas for a dollar and yet...tourists come to this fruit stand and pay $6.50 for a tiny mediocre smoothie. I'm about ready to quit my job and move to the Big Island to open a fruit stand and give these jokers some competition because the idea that they charge $6.50 for a mediocre in a land where there is so much fruit is highway robbery. I admit. I'm spoiled. I lived in Brazil and there was a fruit stand selling mind-blowing fruit juices for like a dollar or 2 on every corner. Where are the fruit stands on the Big Island? Can we attribute this lack of fruit juices/smoothies to Americans' dislike of fruit? I'm totally confused as to why people are giving this place 5 stars when you can drive down the road, buy some papayas from some kids on the street for much less, and make your own smoothie for so much cheaper than this place.

Great smoothies! Lovely selection of fresh and dried fruit. Easy parking. Check it out!

The fruit was okay- but it's awesome knowing its fresh. The smoothie are AHHMMAZZINNGGG!!! I don't even like smoothies and i lloveeedddd it! The lady who owns it was super duper nice. We came on a day where she ran out of fruit- you can tell she felt really bad. Anyhoo, good stuff!

One of my top reasons for loving the Big Island is the agriculture. For my first visit, I really wanted to try all the exotic and local fruit I could. After reading about the SK Fruit Stand, I knew I had to go. The friendly and knowledgeable owner was helpful and helped us selectfruit, especially when we were trying to decide between 3 varieties of avocado. We also found egg fruit which was one fruit we were seeking. The smoothies looked great. An awesome find on the road! You must go!

We rented a nearby cottage and stopped here regularly on our honeymoon. Loved the selection of interesting, local fruit and Beth the owner's friendly willingness to tell us what to try and whether it was ripe. Awesome smoothies, lovely people every time we stopped in, and the fruit, well, that was fantastic. Highly recommend!

This place is adorable. The fruit? Fresh, colorful, delicious & affordable. It's all grown on the farm out back. The view? Fantastic. The service? Helpful & friendly. I desperately wanted to drive back for lunch before we left Kona, but it wasn't meant to be. If I ever return (fingers crossed!), South Kona Fruit Stand will be a must-visit site for me.

A fruit stand with some exotic tropical fruit We usually stop here at least once during our stay on the Big Island. Each time we buy a different type of avocado or fruit that is unusual and intreaging. They also sell smoothies. Prices are similar to others, not cheap but fair. Their outdoor seating area has an awesome view of the ocean and is tucked amongst fruit trees.

So good! Got coconut milk and pineapple, coffee, and a cookie. Beautiful atmosphere and everything comes from their organic farm! The people were very friendly as well; will definitely return when I'm back in Kona!

We had this place bookmarked on Yelp and drove by it then decided to stop, not realizing it was on our list until we got there. Lucky us. Very cool fruit stand, huge variety of fruit, some of which I had never heard of before (like some fruit that takes like vanilla pudding?), some pastries, smoothies too. The lady was really nice and answered all of our questions as to what things were, how they tasted like, etc. My only problem was she was constantly trying to sell, ("those are the [insert name here] fruit, they taste like this. You should get it and try it!"). I mean I understand wanting to up sell, but you don't need to pull the salesman act on us. In the back room they've got some refrigerated stuff. We ended up leaving with a smoothie (which was good, I admit, even though they use apple juice as a base for all of their smoothies, I don't get it), and a little tub of cut mango and a little tub of varied fruit. Also, they have a very nice, clean restroom. Always a plus.

Found this "local gem" thanks to our Big Island Revealed book and it did not disappoint. The owner is very nice and friendly. You can tell she takes pride in her products. There was a great assortment of various types of papaya, avocado, mangoes ect. Coffee is wonderful and grown on her farm. There are smoothies, dried fruit, and house made treats but didn't try them this time around. Definitely recommend stopping by if you're driving through town. Cash or card (visa or m/c) with $10 minimum.

I can't count the number of times that I've driven by this stand without stopping. I have no idea why we never stopped until our trip this year. They make a mean smoothie and do it the right way: starting with frozen fruit. In addition to pretty darn good smoothies, they make a mean sandwich. They prep each one individually and use a panini press to make them nice hot and full of melty cheese. So tasty! If you're really feeling adventurous try a few of the random fruit options that they have around. I don't even remember the names of most of them, but as an example they have a fruit that is filled with what resembles vanilla custard. So weird, yet so good!

Wonderful smoothies, nice paninis, great natural ambience in the seating area! The owner is very friendly and the food is ready real quick! Strongly recommend that you go here if you find yourself on the big island.

Lots more than just a fruit stand. The owner is gluten free so lots of yummy baked goods to choose from - tropical carrot cake with cream cheese icing is my favorite! Exotic local fresh fruit and great smoothies too.

Found this today, thanks to Yelp. The GPS was a little off so I called to ask where they were and no sooner did the lady at the fruit stand answer that I spotted them, "I see you!" (CLICK). I hung up on her out of sheer excitement as I had read such great Yelp reviews about their fresh fruits, baked goods and refreshing smoothies. And the Yelpers get it right again. Lilikoi smoothie was just lilikoi, apple juice and banana--no dairy, no ice, no added sugar. Their coconut macaroons were sweet and rich but not cloyingly so. I haven't had papaya in awhile so I got my fix with a squeeze of lime juice to give it that right balance of sweet and tart. Lilikoi custard and papaya salad rounded out my morning snack. Great stop along Mamalahoa Highway.

South Kona Fruit Stand has an awesome selection of fruit..... all grown on their farm in the back of the place & they use it to create all kinds of smoothies, sandwiches & refridgerated items. Great items for those hiking for the day, or in our case, heading down to hike around the Volcano We chose the Tropical smoothie which had pineapple, lilikoi & coconut & it was scrumptious! Also snagged some delish apple-bananas. These are the smaller guys that pack huge flavor. They were awesome We had wanted some avocado but they were hard & we were told they'd be ready to eat in a few days.....but we were looking for something to eat that afternoon so the nice lady steered us towards their homemade guacamole. It was delightful w/ huge hunks of avocado & a nice spice Finally, we saw their impulse-buy mini mac nut tarts & coudln't resist - nice hiney flavor & tons of macs packed into a buttery, crunchy cookie crust...Mmmmm Awesome stop & well worth the detour, no matter which direction you're driving!

I got some of the fruits which I usually got in Asia. They taste very good and juicy. I am surprised that the name of many fruits containing the word 'Apple', such as starapple, and so on. The place is fun to explore, but to me it's OK as I already tried some of the fruits before. And the size of the smoothie is pretty small.

We stopped here during our last trip to Hawaii back in 2005 - 10 years ago. My wife was really looking forward to a return visit. The lustre quickly faded as the owner watched us like thieves. I wanted to try a bite of mango, which was already peeled and cut, in order to determine if we'd like more than one container. She began ringing up the purchase and required me to pay immediately. We were made to feel quite unwelcome. Also, at some point my son was looking at the colorful soaps they sell at this fruit stand. Shortly thereafter, Fruit Nazi is seen counting the soaps. Additionally, the owner made a snide remark in a very passive aggressive manner about allowing the use of a credit card for less than $15. I told her I had plenty of cash and happy to pay with that form, but didn't know there was a minimum for CC. The owner's reply was, "We have a very large sign." Wow. So, we got a decent container of mango, an average cookie, and a bottle of soda. Fruit stands are a dime a dozen. I think we'll find another.

Great display and selection of local produce, most of it grown on their small 6 acre organic farm. We had panini and a smoothie. Very friendly staff. Great spot for lunch or a refreshing smoothie!

  • L. K.

The smoothies are a tad expensive, and okay for what you get. There are a nice selection of exotic fruits, and they are in pretty good shape. The avocados and mangos are quite a big larger than what you'd usually see on the mainland. I didn't feel that overwhelmingly impressed by the smoothies, hence the lukewarm review. Also, most of the goods were pretty expensive in my opinion.

We stumbled upon South Kona Fruit Stand while staying near by. The lady that worked there (we nicknamed her Lily Flower because she had such a free-spirited friendly demeanor) was so nice to us. She took time and explained every fruit, it's name, it's taste, it's location, the different types, things about the island....everything. We stopped by this stand for breakfast and lunch everyday. The fruits were amazing and unique! They tasted so fresh and so sweet. The smoothies weren't like anything that you get at a typical chain or back across the water. They were filled with nothing but fruit...no ice or water filler. So rich and satisfying. The sandwiches were also very yummy. We absolutely loved this place. Ended up stopping by so much that the Ms. Lilly Flower threw in some freebies. Real gem, excellent find! Highly recommend this place.

I spontaneously stopped by the fruit stand after a grueling Captain Cook hike. Lots of neat fruit, a nice selection of nuts, and pastries and sandwiches too. I ordered a fresh fruit smoothie and it was very refreshing. The woman working here was lovely to chat with. Two thumbs up!

  • Louis R.

5 stars for the awesome selection of local Hawaiian fruits I've never tasted (dragon fruit?! strawberry papaya?!) and the aloha from the owner lady. I deducted 1 star cuz it said "people love us on Yelp" on the billboard outside. Don't, lady...just don't. Mahalo.

  • Emily n.

Good smoothie but portion size is small for the price......but this is Hawaii. I wouldn't buy fruits here. They are pricy and not much varieties. Go 30 mins south, keep an eye on the left side, and there is a less fancy looking fruit stand but the price is much cheaper and there are more exotic fruits. I got a whole papaya for 0.75 there while here you get prob 1/4 of the size for the same price.

Great produce, lovely, helpful owner, fun, relaxed, delicious products...a very enjoyable stop. Nothing not to like here for me.

What a lovely place! We stopped there after a long hot day exploring and were delighted to find smoothies, sandwiches and snacks. They even had some gluten free options which I was grateful for. We ate there and felt like we were in a beautiful lush garden. The staff was friendly and the place had a small town hospitality feel. A perfect roadside fruit/snack stand!

  • Kelvin C.

They have lots of tropical exotic fruits I've never seen or heard of before at South Kona Fruit Stand. They're open everyday, even though the yelp hours say its open only a few days of the week. One fruit you have to try is the Star apple fruit (I think thats what its called). It tasted like Longan Jelly! Anyways, they have lemons the size of your head and avocados the size of your ____. The smoothies are also really good as I got to try the mango one. Careful not to stand in one place to long...they have red ants running around all over the place!

  • Marco M.

We are going here straight from the airport. Went at least three times last visit and we will be much closer so I might figure out a way to go there every day! They have an organic farm that produces amazing produce like: huge avocados, papayas, snake fruit, egg fruit, abui, and so much more. I am a tropical fruit fiend and they always have stuff I never had before. They never have tons of anything but what they have is always amazing. I will be there in six weeks and can't wait!!!!

    (5)
  • Marti A.

Great exotic fruits and fresh veggies. If they have bags of organic Kona coffee beans, buy it. Try a medium (not dark) roast. It's a great gift or for lazy Sunday brunches once you get back home. This is a standard stop for us on the island. Beth is a sweetheart and always remembers us even though we only see her once or twice a year.

  • Maureen W.

Fresh. Local. Organic. (I think). GLUTEN FREE!!! You have no idea how happy the latter made me! A gluten free girl in Hawaii who was not expecting to find anything that would be compatible was completely and delightfully surprised to discover gluten free banana bread and carrot cake! And Rice Chips for the fresh and amazing guacamole! I love to eat a meal of snacks, and that is precisely what I found. They do have sandwiches, but no GF bread as of yet. Their shakes are no-sugar added delights and I'm craving the lilikoi one right now just thinking about it! FYI, 5-year plan: Hubby and I have bought some acreage in Captain Cook, are selling coffee to Emerich (you know who you are!) and are friends with Beth and Ken and have 2 kids. Beth is lovely. :) (she's the owner)

Easy to find, came early so there was no crowd. Little pricey. Fruits were few but definitely exotic. Don't go looking for oranges or pears here, instead there are cashew apples, sapotes, and dragon fruit. Smoothies were nice and refreshing. If you're in the area, definitely stop by but skip it otherwise. Service was so-so. We were inquiring on how to eat some of the fruits, and we could not get much info. When we also asked where we can get some coconuts (cause we know coconuts were not exotic for this stand), the girl said in a sarcastic fashion, "I don't know... the market, I guess..." Really? When we finally went to a farmers market later on, we basically found most of the same fruits that they had WITH fresh coconuts. For less.

  • Curious L.

Wonderful fruits. We stopped by on our drive from Hilo back to Kailua Kona. I picked up mangoes, dragon fruits and jaboticaba. Mangoes and dragon fruits are our favorite. I think they only harvest whatever is available on the farm on the day. On the 2nd day we visited the fruit stand, they sold out of mangoes. Lucky, the guy who brought all the mangoes shared 1 with us. If they really run out of the kind of fruit you like, which should not be the case, try their smoothies and juice. Go to South Kona Fruit Stand if you can't go to a Farmers' Market. The store open every day.

Amazing!!!! This is the perfect stop for a fresh fruit smoothie, unique island fruits and delicious homemade pastries. Everything is grown on the land behind and you can tell they take great pride in their creations. Great little private patio to enjoy as well!

Very nice fruit stand, all with produce from the farm directly behind them. We stopped here in hopes that they were still serving sandwiches, but unfortunately we had just missed them by 20 mins. Instead we bought some mangos to take home and eat later at the condo and two smoothies. A mango one for me and a pineapple one for josh. They were spendy but delish! Perfect little snack. Friendly people were running it too.

Good selection of fruit, but the coffee was over-priced and didn't live up to the Kona reputation.

  • Beth B.

Wonderful little fruit stand in paradise! Lots of varieties of local fruits, several unfamiliar to me (didn't know there were multiple types of bananas)! Fun place to shop for fruit, plus delicious smoothies and even gluten-free baked goods. Other baked goods and panini sandwiches looked yummy, but we were delighted to find the best gluten-free tropical carrot cake! Super friendly staff too. Don't miss this stop while in the South Kona area!

Such a cute little roadside place to stop! My girls got a pineapple/banana smoothie and wow, it was delicious! My husband had some coffee and a cookie. Would definitely stop here again.

  • Randall G.

Loved the smoothie and panini. Probably the most unusual fruit stand I've been to with different varieties and all grown on their farm (from what I was told). Don't miss the sandwiches and enjoy on their patio under the banana trees! The woman helping was a delight and knowledgeable. As another reviewer said it was in a different place than yelp thought... I'll be back...

  • C K.

This is the BEST fruit stand on the Big Island, all of the fruit and produce is grown on the owners farm. Tons of gluten free and dairy free options, I love their gluten free brownies. Most of the GF treats are in the back fridge and if you see fresh cut mango in the fridge, get it. It's the best mango I've ever tasted.

    (5)
  • Martina F.

great smoothie, great food, great experience. Loved the introduction of the ladies. They offer fruits, I have never seen before and a lot of different mangos. Their panini sandwiches are great and so are their smooties. The lanai, on which you will enjoy your food has a great view. It is not cheap, but you are paying for organic quality.

After reading reviews, I was excited to come here and buy loads of fruit and veggies. I don't understand what the hype is all about. I was extremely disappointed. There wasn't much variety of fruit and it was expensive! I was more satisfied with the fruit from the farmer's market in Kona. I'll pass on this place.

  • Lina P.

I've seen pictures before I had even seen it. When we drove up to it today, I was surprised to see that it was smaller then I thought. They sell mostly exotic fruit. I bought some brazilian grapes (jabuticaba) and Im pretty sure it gives me stomach aches. Twice I ate a few and I get cramps/pains. I ate a tomato looking-kiwi tasting fruit, THAT was pretty tasty. My only issue is the price. Its just to expensive to buy more then a couple fruits. Its priced for tourists so I get it. I need to try their baked goods as there was many different ones.

  • A V.

This is a must for all lovers of exotic local fruits, veggies and products of every kind. We go there 3 or 4 times every time we're on the Big Island.....who knew there were so many different kinds of mangos, pineapples, bananas etc....!!!! The staff is just wonderful and lots of fun. Don't miss this place........Between mile markers 103 and 104 on Mamalahoa Highway

These are the best smoothies on the island, and I live here, so I think I have tried them all. Many varieties, and they are made entirely of fruit, they don't use crushed ice like lots of places do. You can get healthy additions like spirulina and protein powder, to turn your smoothie into a meal. If you aren't feeling like being a health nut, the baked goods are fabulous! Some of the best cookies I have ever had. And some gluten free options too. The fresh fruit for sale is AMAZING. You simply must stop just to see all the exotic fruits that you never knew existed. It's a popular spot, so they run out of things. That's how it is when you are popular and the food is fresh. I stop frequently, and they are always wonderfully friendly, and so knowledgeable about fruit!

If you're going to spend a day at the Two-Steps Beach (Honaunau Bay, the best snorkeling beach on Big Island), then this is the perfect stop to eat (or pack your lunch to take to the beach). It has amazing fruits, smoothie and panini and located ~500 ft south of the intersection of HW11 and HW160 (on the mountain side) We were going to just grab the panini's but end up eating at the farm which is right behind the fruit stand, we chatted with the co-owner (Beth?) about her farm, and the many beautiful plants and fruits she grew organically (no chemicals, no pesticides). The smoothie was really fresh and the fruits we tried (tangelo, pomelo, apple banana, strawberry papaya) easily beat the best we could get from WholeFood. The veggie panini were made with amazing sun-dried tomato and you can taste the fresh ingredients. The portion wasn't big given the price but it's surprisingly fulfilling (i have a suspicion that if you eat the freshest and most nutritious organic ingredients your body doesn't really need that much). Even the simple avocado slices that came with the panini were simply out of this world good, it's amazingly smooth and has complicated flavors and really change my opinion about avocado altogether. Beth said the fruit stand and their farm operation is only possible because it's located at the southern end of famous Kona Coffee Belt where the climate is so ideal that anything grows. For two days we ate those amazing fruits/panini and swam with turtles at the Two-Steps, and glimpsed what living in paradise was like.

I am so happy that we bought a cooler to keep in the car! We stopped at S Kona Fruit Stand and stocked up on several kinds of papaya and avocado. We also got fresh figs and these delicious little yellow fruit that tasted like vanilla custard on the inside. They make delicious coffee and smoothies and there was this little cup of dessert in the cooler that was like a coconut custard with passion fruit syrup on it. Amazing! So friendly and I was very pleased to see that the produce was different each time we went. I always look for that in fresh produce markets. That means that they get it fresh and take the best of what is available. They certainly had the best of the items that we chose. I will never look at papaya and avocado the same way again!

Fruit paradise with all local fruits, food, smoothies and a wonderful seating area with fountain. Worth stopping by on a trip south (towards volcano) or north on your way to Kona. Family owned and operated by a family from Little Neck, NY. Just heavenly.

I was having a blast on the island stopping to check out anything that caught my eye. South Kona Fruit Stand definitely did with it being so cute and the picaresque fruit stand of the island. I imagine it would be easy to find of you were looking for it tho, because it sits up on a raise driveway with it's own parking lot just off the hwy. They had homemade breads, candies, and treats for all. I choose to walk away with a very scrumptious passion fruit custard. Served cold, it was super yummy and definitely put a smile on my face. I knocked a star off because I guess I got there too late and their lady that makes the smoothies (which I really wanted) wasn't there yet so they could provided one for me :/

Such friendly service, beautiful garden and delicious baked goods and smoothies! The pineapple and banana had me heading back for more!!! I just made it four stars as my second visit had a different person working and she seemed absolutely miserable. Sandwiches were pretty good and smoothies are still to die for!

weak coffee, but exotic fruits - sourpost (think pina colada, and cashew apple (which btw i had a slight allergic reaction too even though i didnt go anywhere near the actual nut). nice stop to and or from volcano and kona

This place is great... Smoothies and baked goods are yummy. Everything there is organically grown and made on site. It is also "green" friendly. Above the shop you can sit and enjoy your purchases in their relaxing sitting area with a terrific view of the ocean. They were really friendly and accommodating. Google maps leads you on a wild goose chase at the end when its not necessary, its right off the road.

yeay! in a state where you'd think there would be produce coming out your ears, there is a shortage of readily available veg out there. maybe i am spoiled by sf's farmer's markets and food co-ops. but, not here at the South Kona Fruit Stand in Captain Cook--everything is organic and grown right there!! the most wonderfully knowledgeable lady told us all about the exotic tropical produce that grows on the big island and suggested things that might tickle our taste buds according to what we liked. i like crunchy/tangy/sour, my friend likes mushy/sweet/grainy, etc. we came home with lovely things to snack on in our hotel room that night and breakfast on in the morning.

Excellent fruit stand with a wide variety of options. Stopped here our first to pick up fruit and ended up coming back once more. The lady, who's name I didn't catch, was very knowledgeable and helpful. She helped us pick out ripe fruit as well find fruit we might like. And the prices were very reasonable as well.

  • Emily C.

Considering this is all from a single organic farm, the variety is amazing. You know you're getting what's truly fresh and truly local. The woman working at the stall was very helpful, explaining what different things were (of course they had some fruits we'd never heard of) or the differences between varieties of mango and papaya. Their strawberry papaya also came with a great suggestion: try it with a squirt of lime! NO JOKE, this is a fantastic treat. We had a few chinese lemons leftover from the Hilo Farmers' Market, so I used one of those. Perfect balance of sweet and sour. I also gave in and tried the apple banana -- I usually hate bananas, but this tasted nice, not as mushy or banana-y, kind of like an unripe banana taste with a ripe-enough texture. I didn't dig the tree tomato (kind of like a guava? but with a savory tomato-y edge, and it looks like a plum tomato), but it was interesting to try.
